Natural Tunnel gearing up for Halloween events

DUFFIELD — Halloween is just around the corner, and Natural Tunnel State Park is ready to celebrate.

Throughout the last half of October, the park will offer several spooky activities at little or no charge. Below is a complete schedule of events.

Oct. 20

11 a.m.-3 p.m. — Halloween Harvest Activities: Bring your family and friends out for an afternoon of fun. There will be fall crafts, games and much more. Meet at the Visitor Center. (Free)

Oct. 21

9 a.m. — Falls Foliage Kayak Trip: Paddle nine miles along the Clinch River and enjoy the sights and sounds of fall. Preregistration is required. For information on age requirements and prices, call the park office at (276) 940-2674. Meet at the Stock Creek Interpretive Center.

2 p.m. — Fall Colors Hike: Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Lover’s Leap Trail. Take in the stunning views of the awe-inspiring mountains as the leaves begin to change from a deep green to vibrant red, orange and yellow hues. Meet at the Visitor Center. (Free)

Oct. 23

6 p.m. — Full Moon Hike: Take part in a guided hike to the gazebo and be part of a unique experience at Natural Tunnel. This 1.2 mile hike will take place along a semi-moderate trail. Sturdy hiking shoes and a flashlight are recommended. Meet at the Blockhouse parking lot. (Free)

Oct. 24

6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. — Full Moon Ghost Story Hayride: Enjoy an evening hayride through the park, listening to stories and legends of the past. View the full moon as it illuminates the forest. Preregistration is required. For information on age requirements and prices, call the park office at (276) 940-2674. Meet at the Cove Ridge Center.

Oct. 27

1-5 p.m. — Frontier Harvest Festival: Take a step back in time over 200 years ago with the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association. See, touch, taste and smell what fall offered to the settlers. Members of the association will be dressed in period attire, providing ongoing demonstrations in which guests can take part. Meet at the Blockhouse. (Free)

7-10 p.m. — Lighting of the Tunnel: Take a lantern-lit chairlift ride down to the tunnel. Dress in your favorite Halloween costume.

Oct. 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27

5 p.m. — Fall Colors Hayrides: Enjoy a relaxing hayride through Rye Cove and experience the true essence of fall. Preregistration is required. For information on age requirements and prices, call the park office at (276) 940-2674. Meet at the Blockhouse parking lot.

Oct. 19, 20, 25 and 26

7 p.m. — Haunted Cave Tours: Explore the underground wonders of one of the park’s many caves. Listen to the stories and legends of the past and even catch a glimpse of some cave critters.
